Why am I unable to edit/save word documents and am being told I need a subscription, even though I own a license?

I recently began getting messages on my Word documents that I could not edit and save them without a subscription. I purchased a single use license and have been using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with no difficulty until recently. I did not want a monthly subscription, and I was of the understanding that a purchase entitled me to complete use of this suite of programs. This is creating problems for me with my previous documents as well as any new ones I am trying to create. What is going on, and how do I get this resolved?

Hi,

This usually happens when Word signs in under the wrong account and temporarily switches to a Microsoft 365 "subscription" mode. To fix it, open File > Account and check which account is signed in. If it shows a school, work, or different Microsoft 365 account, sign out and sign in with the Microsoft account you used to redeem your one-time license, that’s what tells Word you actually own the perpetual version. Next, look under Product Information; if it says "Microsoft 365," uninstall that copy and reinstall your purchased version from account.microsoft.com/services to ensure the correct license type. Finally, go back to that same web page to confirm your license appears as "Office Home & Student" or "Office 2021," and reinstall or re-activate from there if it’s missing. This usually restores full editing and saving rights without needing a subscription.

Hi,

It sounds like your copy of Office Home & Student 2021 for Mac was accidentally replaced by the Microsoft 365 version, which causes the "subscription required' message even though you already own a license. To fix this, completely uninstall the current Office apps by dragging Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to the Trash and deleting the "com.microsoft" folders in ~/Library/Containers to remove old license data. Then reinstall Office only from the account.microsoft.com/services page using the account linked to your 2021 license, this ensures you get the correct, non-subscription version. After reinstalling, open Word and sign in with the same licensed account to reactivate it; you should then see "Office Home & Student 2021" listed as your product, and full editing and saving functions will return.

    Forgive me for being pessimistic. Microsoft Word was a great product and still is. My conspiracy theory is that these "accidents" are programmed in by the businesspeople. Businesspeople tend to kill their own products for short-term financial gain. Microsoft now wants you to buy a subscription indefinitely since it became a standard in word processing.

    I determined that I have accounts under 2 different email addresses. However, this problem I have literally started about a week ago, with no changes made to anything on my end. I found my license and even when signing in to that account, I still get the message I need to activate 365.I downloaded the app again and can see that it was downloaded today on my computer.I assume it overwrote the previous copy I had? However, I still am unable to create new documents, edit/save previous documents, or do anything but read older documents. I have no idea how to proceed.

    Which specific version of Office did you purchase? Office Home 2024? Or some other version?

    Also, which version of macOS do you have?
