Hi and good day.

I am wondering if there are any developments or news on when Microsoft will integrate APA 7th edition (released in 2019) into MS Word's citations and bibliography?

Thank you!

Dear @Earl Donise John G. Bunal,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. We are happy to assist.

Currently, Microsoft Word does not include APA 7th edition in its built-in citation styles. The default remains APA 6th edition, and Microsoft has not announced an official timeline for adding APA 7th edition.

While waiting for an official update, you can manually add APA 7th edition to Word by following these steps:

  1. Download the APASeventhED.xsl file from the Microsoft Community thread: APA 7th Edition in MS Word. (Moderator note: updated file: https://github.com/briankavanaugh/APA-7th-Edition)
  2. Completely exit Word.
  3. Using File Explorer, copy the downloaded file to:
       C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Bibliography\Style

  4. Restart Word. Go to the References tab, and you should now see APA 7th edition as an option.

The APA 7th edition style file referenced above is community-created and not officially provided or supported by Microsoft. Use it at your own discretion. Microsoft does not guarantee its accuracy or functionality, and any issues arising from its use should be addressed through the community source where it was obtained. For official guidance, please refer to Microsoft documentation and feedback channels.

To make Microsoft aware of the need for APA 7th edition, I encourage you to submit feedback directly to Microsoft via the Office apps (Help > Give feedback), or through Feedback Hub by

Go to: Microsoft 365 Feedback Hub > Send Feedback> Describe your proposal in detail.   User's image

No one here can predict what Microsoft will be doing. We are your fellow users and do not have access to internal plans. Since it has been six years with no action, I would not hold my breath. Viego gave a link to a good user-created file that I and many use. He also gave good instructions. Since this does work and it has been some time, I recommended it as an Answer to your question to help future users of this forum.
