I got an email saying my Outlook was outdated with a link to "update" it. Is this a real Windows email or a scam?

Hi Ann

The email you received about Outlook being outdated and prompting you to click a link to "update" it is most likely a phishing attempt. Microsoft does not send update requests via email with clickable links. Outlook updates are handled automatically through Microsoft 365 or Windows Update.

Here are a few signs that the email may be a scam:

  • The sender’s email address doesn’t end in @microsoft.com.
  • The link doesn’t go to a Microsoft domain (you can hover over it to check).
  • The message uses urgent or threatening language to pressure you into clicking.

What to do:

  • Please do not click any links in the email.
  • Delete the message immediately.
  • If you clicked the link or entered any information, I recommend changing your Microsoft account password and enabling two-factor authentication.
