Having headings in multilevel list disables automatic numbering

Hello,

I'm trying to use Headings in a multilevel list, but when I press enter at the end of, say, "A. Text," I get a new paragraph without any numbering. I've tried asking DeepSeek for help, but its suggestions aren't working. Right now, I'm applying the Headings via the Define New Multilevel List section, but I also tried adding Numbering to the Heading itself via the Styles group on the Home tab. It seems the only way to get automatic numbering is to go to the beginning of the last bullet and press enter, which is not what I want to do. Either way, there's no automatic numbering if I press Enter at the end of the line. What can I do to fix this issue?

Thanks in advance.

When you use the Heading Styles associated with a multilevel list, what happens when you press the Enter key at the end of a paragraph depends on the setting in the Heading Style definition for "Style for Next Paragraph."

So, for Heading 1 style you would want it to be Heading 1.

If you have AutoFormat as you type set for lists, you can use Tab and Shift-Tab to adjust levels.

    See my pdf: https://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/AutomaticNumbering.pdf

By default, the "Style for following paragraph" for all the built-in heading styles is Normal because it is expected that a heading will be followed by ordinary paragraph text. If you are trying to create an outline containing only numbered paragraphs, then switch to Outline view. In that view, when you press Enter at the end of a numbered heading, you will get another paragraph in the same style. You will also have convenient buttons for changing outline levels.
