what service is required to use help in Word? Getting an error message that says "Your Administrator has turned off the service required to use this feature" when I try to use Help in Word

I am the Administrator but I don't know if I am running WinHelp and don't know how to tell if it is properly configured

Hello Mustang Sallie, thanks for posting this in our community.

The error message you’re seeing when trying to use the Help feature in Microsoft Word usually means that connected experiences have been disabled in your Office privacy settings.

To fix this, open Word and go to File, then Options. In the General section, look for Privacy Settings on the right side. Click it, and make sure the options to enable optional connected experiences and to turn on experiences that download online content are both turned on. After making these changes, click OK and restart Word. These settings allow Word to access online services, including the Help system. If they’re turned off either by a system administrator or due to privacy preferences you’ll encounter that error message.

Kind regards,

John Oli

I am happy that this worked for Mustang Sallie, but when I try the exact same process, I have a problem. In the Privacy Settings, under the heading of "Connected experiences", the check boxes for "Experiences that analyze your content" and "Experiences that download online content" are grayed out and won't let me turn them on. What to do about that? Thanks.

The error message "Your Administrator has turned off the service required to use this feature" typically indicates that a specific service related to the Help functionality in Microsoft Word has been disabled by your system administrator. This could be related to the Windows Help application or HTML Help, which are necessary for displaying help content. If you are running WinHelp, ensure that the Windows Help application is available and properly configured. If you are using HTML Help, make sure that HH.exe is installed and accessible on your system.

To resolve this issue, you may need to contact your administrator to enable the required services or check your system settings to ensure that the necessary help applications are installed and configured correctly.
