Need help with activation issues involving Windows 11 pro versus 11 Home

I purchased an HP laptop several months ago which came preinstalled with Windows 11Pro. It has been running fine until a few days ago when it began popping up with a prompt to activate Windows by going to Settings. Went to Settings and attempted to activate. Activation failed. Error message said couldn't connect to my "organization's activation server" and referred me to my "organization", but since I ma a private user that made no sense. Ran troubleshooter and said found a Windows 11 Home digital license for this device running Windows 11 Pro. To activate using this digital license, "you need to install Windows 11 Home".

I have made no changes to the hardware. I've tried telephone and online help at Microsoft and can't seem to find any answers. The telephone rep cut me off when I started to ask my question.

How do I keep running Windows 11 Pro - or do I have to activate 11 Home first and then upgrade to 11 Pro? Any help will be much appreciated

This means you are using a volume license the KMS type. This type of license is for organization users only. Organizational users are required to connect to the organization's KMS server to validate license every how often to stay activated. If you are not a organizational user, you shouldn't be using this type of license. It is considered a violation of licensing terms. If you are an organization user, contact your work IT regarding how to connect to their KMS server.

You can type cmd in the search on the taskbar and hit enter to launch command prompt, then run the following command:

slmgr /dlv

A pop up window will show you some details about your license. You can see if you mention volume license KMS somewhere.

Launch Powershell (note, it is not Command Prompt, but Powershell), and run this code to see if you have an OEM license on the motherboard.

(Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService -Property OA3xOriginalProductKey).OA3xOriginalProductKey

If it returns a license key, it means your motherboard has an OEM license for Windows Home edition, but you need to do a clean install in order to use this OEM license to properly and legally activate your Windows Home.

This is very helpful. I have found a Volume KMS Window license key. I would like to keep using Windows Pro, however, which I assume means I will need to first be running Home and them upgrade to Pro. What is involved in doing a clean install?

A few things I need to explain better -

If you are an organization user, reach out to your IT team at work, they can help you re-validate your KMS license. If you are a home user, you need to buy a legitimate copy of Pro license and get off KMS license.

Next, I need to know if the Powershell command returns a license key. If it doesn't, it means you don't have Home license either, so going back to Home edition is not necessarily helpful. Let me know if it indeed returned a key, so I can come up with a more solid plan for you.

I am definitely a home user, and old Boomer at that. I have run Powershell and also cmd. I think I have found the information needed about the license. I hope you can read this attached screenshot and advise me on the path forward.

I don't see a product key, and it is probably for the best, because I don't want you to share it here anyway, it is a public platform.

So, if the powershell command returns a key, it is good news for you. You don't have to buy a license. You can just clean install Home edition to get it license properly. Make sure you back up your files first as clean install wipes everything.

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

Now these steps will be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the computer's BIOS boot menu to have it boot from the USB drive.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11, making sure to choose "Custom install" and select the option to delete all existing partitions.

Once the installation is complete, you'll have a clean installation of Windows 11 on your computer.
