Dear Support Team,

I am writing to report an issue with my Microsoft Surface Slim Pen 2. I have been using it without any problems since I purchased it in 2024 along with my Surface Pro X and the Surface Keyboard. However, the pen has suddenly stopped working.

The pen is not recognized by the device when I touch the screen, and it also does not charge when placed in the designated charging slot on the keyboard. I have tried reconnecting and checking for updates, but nothing has solved the problem.

I would appreciate assistance in diagnosing and resolving this issue. Please let me know the next steps.

Hi MS Khawlhring,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Since the pen isn't working for both input and charging, and it's not appearing in Bluetooth, the problem is likely with the pen itself. Here's the most basic checks you can do:

  1. Download and run Surface diagnostic toolkit, follow its instructions.
  2. Make sure there's no charging issue:
    1. Gently clean the pen’s charging contacts and the keyboard slot.
    2. Use a dry, soft microfiber cloth or a cotton swab.
    3. Make sure the keyboard or charger is connected and working.
    4. Leave the pen charging for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Test with another device you have access to (a friend's, a colleague's, or visit a Microsoft Store). Try pairing and charging your pen with it. If it works, the problem is with your Surface Pro X or keyboard.
  4. You can borrow another Surface Slim Pen from someone else (or check at a Pen store), see if it works and charges with your setup. If it does, your original pen is faulty.

If you have tried all these steps and the pen still does not charge, pair, or function, the evidence strongly suggests a hardware failure with the pen itself. As you purchased it in 2024, it's unlikely still under Microsoft's standard 1-year warranty, but you can still check at Microsoft account | Devices:

  • If you're in warranty, you can request a replacement if needed.
  • If you're not, you might still be able to place a request (price varies)
  • Or you can look up a repair shop nearby and ask them to check out your pen.
