Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Hi,
When you change internet providers, any email address tied to your old is usually managed by their mail servers. Once your account is closed, those servers stop accepting connections, meaning you can’t send or receive emails through that address anymore. If you don’t back up or migrate your emails before the switch, you risk losing access to your messages and contacts.
The good news is you can keep your existing emails safe and even continue using that address in Outlook for as long as the provider keeps the account active. Here’s how:
Gather Your Email Settings
Check your current provider’s support page for:
Incoming mail server IMAP or POP
Outgoing mail server SMTP
Port numbers and encryption type SSL/TLS
IMAP is better because it syncs across devices. POP downloads emails locally, which is fine if you just want a backup.
Add Your Account in Outlook
Open Outlook.
Go to File > Add Account.
Enter your email address and click Connect.
If Outlook doesn’t auto-detect settings, choose IMAP or POP manually and enter the details you gathered.
Enter your username and password, then click Next and Finish.
Back Up Your Emails
Even if you keep the account for now, it’s smart to export your emails:
Go to File > Open & Export > Import/Export > Export to a file > Outlook Data File (.pst).
Save the file somewhere safe OneDrive or an external drive.
Let me know how it goes, Happy to help!
