How can I delete a Credit resource in Azure?

Apologies for the wrong child tag. I cannot find any that fits.

I'm trying to delete an Azure tenant but am unable to do so.

First, I need to delete my subscriptions. All but one sub is now deleted, but my last sub somehow contains a "credit" resource of USD100. I am unable to delete my subscription since I have resources in it, and I'm unable to delete the credit resource. It does not have a delete button, and all delete operations like deleting the parent resource group fails.

I'm also unable to create a support request, so hence my question here.

Please get back to me so that I can complete my tenant deletion.

For some reason deleting the parent RG suddenly worked. Closing question.

I’ve actually seen this a few times when people try to shut down a tenant.

The “credit” you’re seeing in the subscription isn’t a real resource at all. It’s a system-generated balance from a free trial or a promo credit, and Azure doesn’t let you delete it because it’s not a deletable resource. One of my old customers ran into the exact same thing and thought it was blocking the subscription delete.

The trick is this. Once the credit expires or the subscription reaches the “disabled” state, Azure will let you delete the subscription. You don’t have to remove the credit because you literally can’t. It’s just part of the subscription metadata.

If you’re stuck because the portal won’t let you create a support ticket, switch to the “Help + support” blade under the Azure Account directory rather than your current tenant context.

That usually works. In our case Microsoft confirmed that nothing needed to be deleted. We just had to wait for the subscription to age out, then the delete option unlocked.

In short, the credit isn’t a resource and you can’t remove it manually. The subscription will become deletable once the credit period ends or the sub transitions to its final state.

To delete a credit resource in Azure, it must be in a status that allows for deletion. Specifically, a credit resource can only be deleted if its status is Failed, Canceled, or Expired. If the credit resource is currently in a Succeeded state, you will receive an error when attempting to delete it.

If you are unable to delete the credit resource because it is active, you may need to move it to another resource group or subscription within the same billing profile before attempting deletion.

Please ensure that you check the status of the credit resource and follow the necessary steps to either delete or move it to facilitate the deletion of your subscription.
