Leaving Microsoft 365 Personal to join existing Microsoft 365 Family

Currently have Microsoft 365 Personal which expires in 5 days. Was invited to join Microsoft 365 Family and I followed the instructions - ie: cancelled auto renewal and followed instructions to join family. Problem is I keep getting expiration notices and the family 365 does not show in my account. What do I need to do to fix this before my current subscription expires at the end of this week?

Hi there!

You actually did it correctly. However, turning off the renewal doesn't mean that your subscription has now ended. You still have 5 days left before it is cancelled automatically and by then that's the only time the Microsoft 365 Family will appear or be shared to your account.

So long as you are already invited, just accept it or check your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services page once your current subscription expires and that will allow you to use the benefit of the family plan.

To resolve the issue of receiving expiration notices while trying to transition from Microsoft 365 Personal to Microsoft 365 Family, follow these steps:

  1. Check Subscription Status: Log into your Microsoft account and navigate to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Check if the family subscription is visible under your subscriptions.
  2. Accept the Invitation: Ensure that you have accepted the invitation to join the Microsoft 365 Family plan. Sometimes, the invitation may need to be re-accepted or may not have gone through properly.
  3. Cancel Auto-Renewal: Since you mentioned that you canceled auto-renewal for your Personal subscription, make sure that this action was successfully processed. You can verify this in the billing section of your account.
  4. Contact Support: If the family subscription still does not appear, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance. They can provide specific guidance and check the status of your subscriptions.
  5. Backup Data: Since your Personal subscription is expiring soon, ensure that any important data is backed up to avoid loss of access.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue before your current subscription expires.

I did steps 1-3 as listed. I moved what I could to my desktop computer but had too many files to get moved and honestly didn't know how to backup items on one drive. I will contact Support when they reopen after the holidays. The family account shows under my nickname and the expired personal account shows under my legal name.

This is what I know: my existing Personal account was under a hotmail address. The Family invite was sent to my iCloud address. My now expired Personal 365 shows my storage is 346% over my limit - it did not transfer over to the family account. The different email address is the only thing I can think of that may have caused the problem. How do I tie the expired Personal account to the new Family account?
