New laptop MSI won't go past update installation at first boot

Hello everyone,

i have an issue with a new laptop I purchased yesterday, an MSI Modern 15 F13MG.

At first boot it goes to step 2 of 3 in "search and install windows updates", then it says updates installation failed and that the pc will be rebooted, but nothing really happens.

I already tried forcing shutdown and booting again, but it gets stuck at the same point.
I also tried to give it time, but two hours passed and nothing changed, so I just don't know what else to do.

Any tips or suggestions?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

It seems like the update failed and caused problems with loading the system properly. To fix this, try booting your PC into WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) mode.

    1. Start your device and wait for the Windows logo (or the manufacturer's logo) to appear.
    2. As soon as the Windows logo appears, press and hold the power button until the device shuts down.
    3. Turn your device on again and repeat step 2.
    4. Turn your device on a third time. Windows should display the Automatic Repair screen.
    5. Select Advanced options.

Once you're in the WinRE screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.

If this option is unavailable, try the Startup Repair or System Recovery method.

Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files/Remove everything and proceed with Local reinstallation.

Let me know if you still need more help.

So, yesterday evening I followed steps 1 to 4 of the solution suggested by Gunasekar N, and when I turned the laptop on the third time, instead of displaying the Automatic Repair screen, Windows just booted properly, resuming the initial configuration as nothing happend.

Soooo... All's well that ends well, I guess...

You may only be able to try the solutions recommended by Ron if your PC is working properly. If the device is unable to boot into the OS and is stuck in a restart loop, you can try the recommendations I’ve provided.

When you are stuck on the setup screen, press Shift + F10 (or Fn + Shift + F10) to open the Command Prompt. Then, enter the following commands in order:

    1. Enable the Administrator Account

Type the following and press Enter: net user administrator /active:yes

If you see the message "The command completed successfully," the account is enabled.

    2. Force a Restart

Type the following and press Enter to reboot immediately: shutdown /r /t 0

    Accessing the Desktop

After the computer restarts, you will see an account named Administrator in the bottom-left corner of the login screen. Click it to log in (it usually has no password). This will bypass the network connection check, privacy settings, and other setup steps, taking you directly to the Windows desktop.

    Managing Accounts

The built-in Administrator account has elevated privileges but is not recommended for daily use. Once you are on the desktop:

Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Other users.

Create a new local administrator account for yourself.

After setup, open the Command Prompt again and run the following command to hide the built-in account: net user administrator /active:no

    Final Steps

Once you have gained access to the system, you can proceed with Windows Updates. The priority is to log in first, then worry about updating the system later.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with Windows update installations. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this problem:

    1. Force Shutdown and Restart: Since you've already tried this, ensure that you hold down the power button until the laptop turns off completely, then turn it back on.
    2. Boot into Safe Mode: If the laptop continues to get stuck, try booting into Safe Mode. You can do this by interrupting the boot process three times (turning off the laptop during boot) to trigger Windows Recovery Environment. From there, navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and then restart to select Safe Mode.
    3. Check for Disk Encryption: If you have any non-Microsoft disk encryption software, it might be blocking the update. Temporarily disable it if possible.
    4. Disconnect Peripherals: Remove all unnecessary peripherals (USB devices, external drives, etc.) and try booting again.
    5. Firmware and Driver Updates: Ensure that your laptop's firmware (BIOS) and drivers are up to date. Check the MSI support website for any available updates.
    6. Reset Windows Update Components: If you can access Safe Mode, you can try resetting Windows Update components. This can often resolve issues with stuck updates.

If none of these steps work, you may need to consider performing a clean installation of Windows, which can be done using a bootable USB drive with Windows installation media. Make sure to back up any important data before proceeding with this option.

If the problem persists, contacting MSI support or Microsoft support may be necessary for further assistance.
