Excel is no longer registered and can't access some server so it won't let me save anything

I've had a valid copy and license of Office 2019 Mac for a while and have had no trouble with it. I use Excel regularly, often several times a day. There's spreadsheet I keep open all the time and make edits to it, then save them. I used it earlier today. I went out for a while, came back made some edits, and now it won't save.

When I click to Activate it, it opens a window that says it's looking for licenses, then "License Storage -- Unable to connect to the licensing helper".

When I click OK it says:

No License Found

No license was found for <my email>. Buy Office for
this account or use another account to activate Office if
you've already bought it.

[Buy Office]
[Use Another Account]

The [Buy Office] link sends me to a page to upgrade Office 2019 to Office 365. That's it.

I don't have another account.

I can open Word and PowerPoint with no problem. They are registered and working just fine.

What the heck happened to Excel and how do I get full access to it again?

It turned out that the problem was pretty simple: the Microsoft Office Licensing setting (in MacOS Settings -> General -> Login Items & Extensions) had switched off somehow. I turned it off, logged out and in a couple of times and then it came back to life. (I'm running on a Mac Mini M4 with Sequoia 15.2)

I got this suggestion from Google with a little more than just a simple question. Context helped.

    Hello, David Schwartz.

Most likely, the problem is from the Microsoft activation servers. To fix it, I recommend contacting a Microsoft support specialist in a live chat. To do this, log in to your MS account on the page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/home/contact?SourceApp=smc2&ContactUsExperienceEntryPointAssetId=www.microsoft.com

In the search bar, type (without quotes) "agent support" and press Enter or click on Get Help. Ignore the search results, and click on the "Contact Support" button at the bottom. On the next page, select "Microsoft 365 and Office" and "Technical Support" from the drop-down lists, and then click on "Confirm". Next, select the chat "Chat with a support agent in your web browser" and on the next page, enter your (the one that works) email address and click on "Confirm". A chat window will open in a new tab. Wait for the operator to respond and explain the situation to him.

Note. The chat is available during business hours and on business days according to US time.

It seems that you are encountering an issue with Excel not recognizing your license, which is preventing you from saving your work. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue:

    1. Check Your License Status: Ensure that your Microsoft 365 license is still valid and assigned correctly. You can do this by logging into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center if you have admin access.
    2. Sign Out and Sign Back In: Sometimes, signing out of your Office apps and signing back in can resolve activation issues. Open Excel, click on your name or profile picture at the top, select Sign out, and then sign back in with your work or school account.
    3. Run the Office for Mac License Removal Tool: This tool can help remove any corrupted license files. You can find instructions on how to use it here.
    4. Uninstall and Reinstall Office: If the above steps do not work, consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Office for Mac. Instructions for uninstalling can be found here.
    5. Check Internet Connection: Ensure that your Mac has a stable internet connection, as activation requires access to Microsoft servers.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
