A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Hi Surendra,
This behavior is not related to your E3 license and does not indicate a licensing problem. An E3 license only governs feature access; it does not control file write permissions. The “file is read-only” message appears when Excel cannot reliably obtain or keep an exclusive write lock on the file at the moment you try to save.
In shared folders (especially on OneDrive, SharePoint, or network file shares), this typically happens because the file is already open by another user, was opened by Excel in a protected or preview state, or because the sync client temporarily lost its lock on the file. Even brief sync interruptions, network latency, or background processes (such as antivirus scans or backup agents) can cause Excel to drop the edit lock and fall back to read-only mode.
Another common cause is file locking conflicts created by co-authoring. If multiple users open the file in different ways (for example, one in desktop Excel and another via a mapped drive or older Excel version), Excel may fail to reconcile the lock and refuse to save changes. Cached credentials or a temporary loss of connection to OneDrive/SharePoint can also trigger this intermittently, which explains why the file sometimes works and sometimes does not.
To reduce or fix the issue, ensure everyone accesses the file from the same source (preferably directly from SharePoint or OneDrive, not via mapped network drives), confirm that no hidden Excel processes are left running, and check that the OneDrive sync client is fully signed in and up to date. Disabling “Always open read-only” settings, avoiding opening the file from email attachments, and ensuring stable network connectivity also help. If the problem persists, copying the file to a new location and re-sharing it can clear corrupted lock metadata.
