Why is Word 2024 opening .docx files in Viewing/Read-only mode?

I'm using Office 2024 on Win11.

Word keeps opening .docx files in "Viewing" mode. If I click on the drop-down box in the upper right of thw window, then there is the option to edit them.

I have checked: FILE > OPTIONS > TRUST CENTER > FILE BLOCK SETTINGS. It is in "Default."

The option: "Open selected file types in protected view" is selected. However, if I change it to "Open selected file types in protected view and allow editing," nothing changes. Word still opens in "Viewing."

I have checked the internet to see if anyone has had the same issue. One guy said to uncheck all the options in TRUST CTR > PROTECTED VIEW. Yeah, . . . that's not gonna happen. Otherwise, nothing very helpful.

Why is this happening?

How do I stop/change it?

    When files are transferred from another PC or external drive, Windows sometimes sets them as Read-only or flags them as downloaded from another source. Word respects these attributes and opens in Viewing mode. You do not need to disable Protected View globally for this scenario. Signing in is optional since files are local. Activation is not the issue here your license is valid even with installment payments.

    The problem is file attributes. When files are copied from another computer or backup, they often inherit the Read-only attribute or blocked status. This makes Word open them in Viewing mode even if they are local and trusted.

    To fix this, remove the Read-only attribute from all affected files. For individual files, right-click the file and select Properties. Under Attributes, uncheck Read-only, then click Apply and OK. To apply this to all files in a folder, select the folder containing your Word files, right-click and choose Properties, then uncheck Read-only and apply to all files and subfolders.

    Finally, check for blocked status. In Properties, if you see an Unblock button, click it.

    In the File Explorer, or the File>Open dialog, right click on the document file and then left click on Properties and check the Unblock box.
