Microsoft Office stopped letting me edit. Requires Office 365 to edit

I purchased Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac in 2023. I have been using this with no issue.

Today, Word and Excel stopped allowing me to edit, and have a yellow bar at the top that state "Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit".

I have no made no changes to my Mac nor anything Microsoft. I created a document 2 days ago and saved it. Today, I opened the document to edit, and I received that message.

Please advise on how to remove the requirement to Activate Microsoft 365, and allow me to use the Office Home & Business 2021 that I purchased.

In one-time-purchases of Office, you do not need to be signed in, so Step 1 isn't relevant.

For step 4 in Word for Mac, choose Word>About Microsoft Word. The dialog that opens should show you Microsoft account email address beside Belongs to:. Click on More Info, then on Refresh License, Word will ask you to sign in, after which it will hopefully reconnect your account with your installation.

If that doesn't fix it, try creating a new user account (System Settings>Users & Groups), signing in to that, then testing if the problem still exists. If it goes away, it's an issue with the user profile part of your Office installation.

If the issue still exists, or you'd rather not move your user data to a new profile, then uninstall Office following these steps: Uninstall Office for Mac Then reinstall from the Subscriptions page of your Microsoft account.

I've been seeing more reports of this "disappearing license" problem. If you have to reinstall, you can find the installer on the Subscriptions page of your Microsoft account. It already has your product key associated with it. After installation, signing in to your account in any of the programs will reactivate the software.

The AI response did not help.

    1. I do not see my name or profile picture at the top of the app.
    2. I updated applications, and this did not solve the issue.
    3. Reinstall Office - I will do this as a last resort.
    4. License verification - Under Account, I do not see "Office App" to check license. But the license worked yesterday, and stopped working today with no changes on my end.
    5. Contact support - is this not what I'm doing with this question?

Is reinstalling Office the only solution? That seems time consuming, and I've already wasted enough time trying to problem solve an issue that I did not create.

It seems that you are encountering an activation issue with your Office Home & Business 2021 for Mac, which is prompting you to activate Microsoft 365 instead. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

    1. Sign Out and Sign Back In: Open an Office app (like Word or Excel), go to your name or profile picture at the top, select Sign out, and then sign back in using the account associated with your Office Home & Business 2021.
    2. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Office applications are up to date. You can check for updates in the app under Help > Check for Updates.
    3. Reinstall Office: If the issue persists, consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Office. You can find instructions on how to uninstall Office for Mac and then reinstall it from the official Microsoft support page.
    4. License Verification: Make sure that your Office Home & Business 2021 license is still valid and properly activated. You can check this in the Office app under Account.
    5. Contact Support: If none of the above steps work, you may need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance, as they can help you verify your license and resolve any account-related issues.

These steps should help you regain editing capabilities in your Office applications without needing to activate Microsoft 365.
