Whenever I try and open an attachment in Outlook, I get a message "You don't have appropriate permission to perform this operation.". When I try and open again, it opens, but every now and again, the attachment also gets corrupted so that I can't open or see it at all.

I have Microsoft 365 and use Outlook classic to view my emails. The troubleshooting I have done so far, include:

  • Uninstalled Microsoft 365 and reinstallled
  • Created a new profile in Outlook and resynced my emails
  • Uninstalled Adobe reader and reinstalled as I thought the problem related to pdfs, but noticed after reinstalling that the problem is still there and also happens when I try and open Excel (xlsx) attachments.

Edit afterwards: I figured out that when I turned realtime scanning off in my antivirus program, McAfee, that I could open the attachments without issue. I contacted McAfee that troubleshooted including removing and uninstalling McAfee, but that still didn't fix the issue. I will leave the realtime scanning off now while McAfee escalate the problem to a senior engineer.

Hello. When the error appears, are you opening the attachment directly from the email, or do you save it to your computer first and then open it? Does the error happen in both cases or only when opening directly from Outlook?

    Try this:

    1. Close Outlook
    2. Press Windows key + R
    3. Paste this and press Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.Outlook
    4. Delete everything inside the folders you see
    5. Open Outlook and try an attachment again

Let me know if the above helped.

The issue you are experiencing with the message "You don't have appropriate permission to perform this operation" when trying to open attachments in Outlook could be related to several factors. Here are some potential causes and resolutions:

    1. Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to access the files. This can sometimes be an issue if the files are located on a network drive or shared location.
    2. Corrupted Outlook Data Files: If your Outlook data files are corrupted, this can lead to problems with opening attachments. You may want to consider repairing your Outlook data files.
    3. Antivirus Software: Sometimes, antivirus software can interfere with Outlook's ability to open attachments. Ensure that your antivirus is not blocking Outlook or the specific file types you are trying to open.
    4. Windows Firewall: If the Windows Firewall service is not running, it can cause issues with opening attachments. Make sure the Windows Firewall service is active.
    5. Updates: Ensure that you have installed the latest updates for both Outlook and Windows, as updates often fix bugs and improve functionality.

If the problem persists, you may want to run the Classic Outlook Advanced Diagnostics troubleshooter to identify any underlying issues automatically.
