In the procedure to add a telephone number to my Microsoft 365 account there is a passage where I am asked to insert the password, but i don't have a password for the account because I use the passkey on my mac - finger print - to login. This is preventing me from completing the process.

Hello!

I'm Yasllame. I'm here to help and clarify.

This behavior is expected. Even when you use a passkey/biometrics to sign in to your Microsoft account, the account still has a password associated in the background. Some security actions—such as adding or changing a phone number—require password confirmation and do not accept a passkey as a substitute.

What you can do:

Create or reset a password for the account

Go to: https://account.microsoft.com/security

Go to Advanced security

Choose Change password or Create password

Set a password (it can be used only for verifications if you prefer to continue using the passkey daily)

After setting the password:

Return to the process of adding the phone number

When prompted, enter the newly created password

Important to know:

The passkey will continue to function normally after this.

The password does not disable biometric authentication.

This requirement is a security measure documented by Microsoft for sensitive account changes.

If, after setting the password, the problem persists, the next step would be to try the process in a different browser or contact Microsoft support, as public forums do not have access to accounts or authentication data.

I hope this information has been helpful! If you need anything else, I'm here.

Sincerely,

If you allow people to access their accounts by a passkey - no password - it is an obvious contradiction that you ask for a password - with no alternative - to add a telephone number to the account.

If you are unable to add a telephone number to your Microsoft 365 account because you do not have a password (since you use a passkey), you may need to reset your password or use an alternative method to access your account settings. Here are a few steps you can consider:

    1. Reset Your Password: If you have access to the recovery options associated with your account (like an email or SMS), you can reset your password to gain access to your account settings.
    2. Contact Support: If you cannot reset your password or if you need further assistance, consider contacting Microsoft Support for help in updating your account details.
    3. Use Another Admin: If your account is part of an organization, you may ask another administrator to help you update your telephone number.

Unfortunately, without a password or access to recovery options, it may be challenging to complete the process directly.
