I cannot find my product key even though I purchased Windows

Hey everyone, I recently built a new PC and ran into an issue where I couldn’t boot from my original drive, so I had to install Windows using a different one. I can still access all my old files from the previous drive, but since this was a fresh Windows installation, it’s now asking me for a product key. If anyone can point me to the file location where I might find my old Windows product key so I can reactivate Windows, I’d really appreciate the help. Thanks! (Windows 10 Home 22H2 – OS Build 19045.6332)

    Hi Kiki Julia Smith,

When you perform a fresh installation of Windows on a new drive, the system will prompt for activation because the digital license tied to your original installation is not automatically carried over. Windows product keys are not stored in a simple text file on the drive; instead, they are embedded in the system registry or, for OEM devices, in the computer’s firmware (BIOS/UEFI).

Since you can still access your old drive, you can retrieve the product key by running a command such as wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey from an elevated Command Prompt while booted into that installation. Alternatively, third‑party key‑finder utilities can read the registry hive from the old drive to extract the key. If your PC was previously activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, signing in with that same account on the new installation should automatically reactivate Windows without needing to manually enter the key.

I hope this guidance helps you recover your product key or reactivate Windows successfully. If this explanation is useful, please hit “Accept Answer” so I know your concern is resolved.

    Jason.

If you have lost your product key after installing Windows on a new drive, you can try to retrieve it from your old installation. Here are a few methods you can use:

    1. Using a Key Finder Tool: There are several third-party software tools available that can scan your old drive and retrieve the product key from the Windows registry. Some popular options include ProduKey and Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder.
    2. Check for a Digital License: If your Windows was activated using a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, you may not need a product key. Simply signing in with the same Microsoft account on the new installation may reactivate Windows automatically.
    3. Look for Documentation: If you purchased a physical copy of Windows, check any documentation or packaging that came with it, as the product key is often printed there.
    4. Contact Microsoft Support: If you are unable to retrieve the key through the above methods, contacting Microsoft Support may help. They can assist you in recovering your product key based on your purchase history.

Make sure to back up your product key in a safe place once you retrieve it to avoid similar issues in the future.
