The default language - English - keeps switching to Portuguese even after RE-setting default to English

I notice this because normal correctly spelled English words are marked as misspelled.

Language is a character-level attribute of the text. The Default only determines the Language used when starting a new document.

Apparently there is text in the document which carries the Portuguese attribute. If all content is to be in a specific Language use Command+A to select all then go to Tools> Language to apply the correct one. Otherwise, it's necessary to select the specific passages to be changed or use a Style which includes the appropriate Language.

Also, make sure the box for Detect language automatically is not checked and go to Word> Preferences to confirm that Match font with keyboard is not checked unless you're familiar with it.

The vocabulary isn't the issue. The Spelling & Grammar features respect the Language attribute of the text being checked. Language is a character level attribute similar to Bold, italic, etc. except that it isn't visually apparent. Word uses the proofing tools based on the Language attribute it detects. The content of this message, for example, very well could carry a Spanish, French, Chinese, or any other supported language I choose to apply. And it's entirely possible for a variety of Languages to be used in any one document.

The Normal.dotm template merely determines the default Language of the installed version being used to create new documents. From that point on the user can intentionally or inadvertently appley any Language(s) s/he chooses. A different Normal.dotm template has no effect on documents received from other sources & content copied from other sources carries its own Language attribute based on its origin.

This old but still relevant article provides more detail.

When you encounter a document which exhibits what you described, Select All then go to Tools> Language to select the right one. The fundamental problem will evaporate in that document. 🙂

There is a truly fundamental problem with the latest version(s) of Word for Mac and its handling of language. Various documents, all created with the same 'Normal' template, keep randomly changing proofing language - sometimes it's German, sometimes, Spanish, sometimes even Japanese. These changes are independent of any vocabulary used in the document.

Furthermore, the same document sometimes opens using a German dictionary, sometimes Spanish. This random behavior in the same document points to an intrinsic problem with Word itself.

I'm appealing for help from Microoft.
