Hello @Mark Taylor,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!
Based on the information I’ve researched and the product knowledge I have, OneDrive for Business is actually built on top of SharePoint technology. In other words, every user’s OneDrive for Business site is essentially a personal SharePoint site collection. Because of this architecture, features that belong to the SharePoint platform, including classic SharePoint Alerts, also apply to OneDrive for Business.
This means that when Microsoft retires SharePoint Alerts in July 2026, the same retirement will naturally apply to any alert functionality that depends on that underlying SharePoint alert engine, including those created through the classic OneDrive interface. The retirement timeline and behavior described for SharePoint Alerts therefore apply to both products since they share the same backend.
Going forward, Microsoft is encouraging organizations to use modern alternatives such as Power Automate or SharePoint Rules for notification scenarios. These tools provide much greater flexibility and are the officially recommended replacements for legacy alert features.
I hope the information above provides some clarity. If you need any further clarification, please feel free to let me know.
Kind regards,
