My authenticator app is not working on my business account

I am the admin for my Office 365 for business account. I was recently logged out of the admin account. When I tried to log back in, it sent a code to the authenticator that was not received. I have the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone. The account is no longer logged into the authenticator app and it needs an authenticator code to log back in.

Hello Sonia Gomez

What has happened here is that your Office 365 admin account is still protected by Azure AD MFA, but the Microsoft Authenticator app no longer has the account registered, so you cannot receive the verification code. Because MFA is enforced, you cannot bypass it or log in without a valid method. The only way forward is to use one of the recovery paths that Microsoft provides for administrators.

First, check if you had a secondary MFA method configured, such as SMS, alternate phone, or email. If so, you can use that to log in and then re‑register the Authenticator app. If you only had the Authenticator app and it was removed, you will need to perform an admin account recovery. For Office 365 business tenants, this requires another Global Admin to reset your MFA settings in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. If you are the only Global Admin, you must open a support case with Microsoft directly. They will verify your identity against the tenant agreement and reset the MFA requirement so you can log back in.

There is no supported way to bypass MFA or generate codes without the app being registered. The correct procedure is either to use an alternate method you previously set up, or to request Microsoft Support to reset your MFA configuration. Once you regain access, immediately configure at least two MFA methods to avoid being locked out again.

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

Harry.

If you are unable to receive the code from the Microsoft Authenticator app and are locked out of your Office 365 admin account, you can try the following steps:

    1. Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support: Since you are the sole administrator, it's crucial to reach out to Microsoft support. You can call their customer service and request to speak with an agent. Make sure to explain that you are the only admin and that you need assistance with resetting your authentication method.
    2. Use the IVR System Effectively: When calling, follow the prompts carefully to ensure you reach the correct department. You may need to indicate that you are a business user and specify that you need technical support.
    3. Alternative Method: If you cannot reach support via phone, consider creating a trial Microsoft 365 tenant. This will allow you to access the Admin Center and submit a support ticket requesting help from the Data Protection team regarding your previous tenant.
    4. Check Other Verification Options: If you have set up any other verification methods, such as email or SMS, try using those to regain access to your account.

These steps should help you regain access to your account and resolve the issue with the authenticator app.
