Possible fake 'Microsoft' email

Received the attached email, purporting to be from Microsoft, thanking me for 'verifying' an account that isn't mine and which does not match any I know. I am assuming it is a scam, but would like to know for sure that it is not an inadvertent error ofn Microsoft's part. I am interested to know how the scammers can hope to gain any worthwhile information from me this way - are they hoping I will click on a link to an email address I have nothing to do with?2026-02-26_073136

Well done for being suspicious, you are correct that is a phishing scam, @microsoftonline.com is not a legitimate Email address, you can safely ignore and delete that Email.
