SQL Server Developer Edition Installer can't identify an installed software it needs.

Hi! I'm having a problem installing Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition.

It says that a certain software is not installed, although it is indeed installed.

Any idea how can I solve this issue?

The following lines are copied from Details.txt file:

The error occurs during the installation of the OLE DB driver MSOLEDBSQL19, and it seems that it is the x86 runtime which is missing.

To troubleshoot this further, the log file msoledbsql19_Cpu64_1.log as well as the VCRuntime140*.log files could be of interest.

But if I am to make a guess out of the blue, the problem is that you had a newer version of the C++ runtime installed before you installed SQL Server, so that installation file skipped its part. But the msoledb19 install wants the exact version. Yes, that is, silly, but I seem to recall having seen people having had similar problems in the past with older versions of SQL Server.

So this log thinks that the installed version is 14.29 which is too low.

In your screenshot above, the x86 version of the VC14 runtime is not listed at all.

It may be that your machine is a bit messed up. I'm not sure what is the best strategy. But maybe you should download the latest install package for the Visual C++ 14 Redistributable and install that separately so that yo get both on version 14.50.

Well, a new error appeared. It's a good sign when troubleshooting (:

I installed the x86 version (the one I installed in the past was x64) and the following error appeared:

Hm, those log files seems to be from Feb 21st, and the error messages are the same as before. I think you attached the wrong log files. You should get the files from the folder in the error message above.

The good news is that MSOLEDBSQL19 now installs successfully.

The bad news is that installation now fails with:

(01) 2026-02-25 11:54:16 Slp: The system cannot find the path specified

And the really bad news is that I have seen people running into error with this file missing before, but I don't have much of a clue what is causing it. (I know that the file is related to the Filestream feature, though.)

A theory I have is that this is one of these errors occurs when you make multiple attempts, possibly with some random cleanup in between that messes things up.

Someone I tried to help (although it might not have been this specific error and file), found this article: https://www.sql-easy.com/learn/how-to-uninstall-sql-server/ and finally reported success. (I was quite impressed.) I have not read the article myself - I have been lucky not to be in this misery.

It could also be that your MSI cache is in disarray. And, no, I'm not very good how to deal with that, so I will have to leave you there.

One solution can be to install a virtual machine and run SQL Server on the VM.
