AutoSave is only available for documents saved to OneDrive or SharePoint. That is how it is.

I believe that it will work as well with documents on your hard drive (C) that are automatically synced to OneDrive.

Otherwise, Ctrl+S is your friend!

I have seen enough people posting here and elsewhere who lost important work relying on AutoSave even when on OneDrive. I do not trust it for anything important.

For other options, see:

This is a user-to-user support forum.

Microsoft is not hearing about your problems from what you post here. You are discussing a problem with your fellow users here. We can give good advice about how to work with Word as it is and give suggestions for making it work properly.

Designers and their supervisors do see feedback. (You will almost certainly not get a direct response to that feedback but they do see it.)

Here is more about that:

I suggest using the public feedback portal so other users can see your feedback, comment and vote. If you want, you can post the URL of your feedback with your question here to lead others with the same problem to your feedback. Be the “squeaky wheel” that gets fixed!

Hello. What you’re seeing isn’t really a new “AutoSave problem,” but Word trying to recover your work after sleep or updates, which unfortunately can create multiple versions that aren’t clearly labeled.

If you prefer to keep everything on your C: drive, you can still make this much more reliable and easier to manage:

    1. Add a safety backup automatically

    • Open Word
    • Go to File > Options > Advanced
    • Under Save, check “Always create backup copy” This gives you a clean previous version every time you save.

    2. Use Windows File History (local versioning)

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Files Backup
    • Select a Add a drive and include your Documents folder This lets you restore earlier versions without guessing.

    3. Quickly find the latest file

    • Open your folder
    • Switch to Details view
    • Sort by Date modified The most recent version will always be at the top.

    4. Check Word’s unsaved files directly

    • Press Win + R
    • Paste: %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles
    • Open the most recent file from there if needed

You don’t have to move to OneDrive if you don’t want to. With these settings, you can keep working locally and still have a much more controlled and predictable way to keep track of your latest work.

AutoSave in Word only works for files stored in Microsoft cloud locations (OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online). It does not work for documents saved directly to a local path such as the C: drive.

To use AutoSave, the document must be saved to OneDrive or SharePoint Online. If the file is saved to C:\ or another non-cloud location, AutoSave will be disabled.

If saving only to C: is required, use manual saving instead (Ctrl+S or File > Save). AutoRecover will still help in case of a crash, but it is not the same as cloud AutoSave.
