This has been fixed as of Release 2602, at least.

STATUS: FIXED This issue has been fixed by a service change. For users still seeing the issue, please close all open Office apps and re-open Word to ensure the change has been picked up.

This is a known issue (see the illustration below). You can report it using the feedback facility in Word.
Now showing up in Microsoft 365 Family subscription with Version 2601.
Starting last year this bug infected client PCs on which M365 updated to V 2511 Build 19426.20218. Reverting the PC to V 2511 Build 19426.20186 resolved the issue.
Move back to 2511.
Microsoft is aware of this issue and it is being investigated.
