If you purchase an upgrade license from the Home version to the Pro version on the Microsoft Store, that is a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

Restart your PC (not shut down) to check if the upgrade to the Pro version is completed.

If the upgrade does not complete, please proceed with the upgrade using a generic Pro key using the following method.

Important - disconnect totally from the Internet

Open the Settings App (Gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Update and Security - Activation

    Click Change Product key

Enter this generic product key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

    When prompted, click 'Activate Product'

If the above does not work first time, restart your PC and try again.

Note the generic key will cause the Home edition to upgrade to the Pro edition, then your own legal licence will activate automatically after you restart (not shut down) your PC

Follow these steps to resolve activation after upgrading from Windows 11 Home to Pro on a new laptop:

    1. Confirm Windows 11 is activated (Home or Pro)
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Activation (or use this shortcut: Open System > Activation).
      • At the top, check:
        • Edition (e.g., Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro)
        • Activation state (e.g., “Active” or an error message)
      • If Windows 11 is not activated at all, follow the guidance in Activate Windows to resolve basic activation issues first.
    2. If a Windows 11 Pro product key was provided with the upgrade Use the key that came with the Pro upgrade purchase:
      1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      2. Next to Change product key, select Change.
      3. If User Account Control appears, sign in with an administrator account and select Yes.
      4. In Change product key, enter the 25‑character Windows 11 Pro product key from the upgrade purchase.
      5. Select Next to start the upgrade/activation process.
This path applies when the device is currently running an activated copy of Windows 11 Home and a valid Pro key is available.
    3. If the Pro product key is not visible but the upgrade was bought through Microsoft Store
      • In Settings > System > Activation, expand Upgrade your edition of Windows.
      • Use the built‑in upgrade flow there to ensure the correct Pro license is applied to the device.
    4. If activation still fails with an error
      • Use the Windows Activation troubleshooter:
        1. Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot (Open Troubleshoot settings).
        2. Run the activation troubleshooter.
        3. If there is a digital license for Windows 11 Pro associated with the device, choose Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro and then Start upgrade.
      • If the troubleshooter reports a specific activation error, follow the guidance in Get help with Windows activation errors to resolve that error.
    5. If the laptop is actually still on Home but a Pro license exists
      • The troubleshooter scenario “You have a digital license for Windows 11 Pro, but Windows 11 Home is installed” applies:
        1. Save work and close apps.
        2. In the activation troubleshooter, select Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
        3. Select Start upgrade and wait for the process to complete.
    6. If none of the above works
      • Verify the Pro key is typed exactly as provided (no spaces, no character substitutions).
      • If activation continues to fail, use the guidance in Get help with Windows activation errors to identify whether the key is blocked, already used on another device, or otherwise invalid, and then contact Microsoft support from that article’s paths.
