Hello Doug Frost!
If Copilot is visible in Word but greyed out, the issue is usually related to license/account validation rather than the button simply being missing.
For Microsoft 365 Family, please note an important detail that only the subscription owner has access to Copilot.

Could you please confirm: Are you the Family subscription owner, or are you using Copilot as a shared family member?
If you're the Microsoft 365 Family subscription owner:
- Is Copilot also greyed out in other Office apps like Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook, or is the issue only happening in Word?
- Does Copilot remain greyed out in a new blank document and also in Word for the web? If it works on the web but not in the desktop app, that may suggest the issue is related more to the local app or license state.
- Also, have you already tried refreshing the Office license by going to File > Account > Update License, then fully closing all Office apps and reopening Word?
I look forward to your response so we could look into it further!
