Thanks for posting here in Microsoft Community. Based on the information that you have provided, it seems that your keyboard is using media keys by default, not normal F1–F12 keys. To fix this try the FN key.

Here's how:

  1. Open Minecraft
  2. Hold FN on your keyboard
  3. While holding FN, press F3
  4. So, it looks like: FN + F3

If this works, your keyboard just needs FN for F keys. Let me know how it goes. Hoping to hear from you soon.

The top row of keys is set to their special functions (brightness, mute, etc.) instead of the normal F1–F12 functions. Turn on the function keys mode so games like Minecraft can use F3, F5, etc.

Try these steps (they vary by keyboard):

    1. Look for an Fn key on the keyboard.
    2. Press Fn once to toggle function mode:
      • On many Surface and Microsoft keyboards, press Fn once to lock the top row as F1–F12.
      • A small light on the Fn key usually turns on when function mode is enabled.
    3. Now press F1, F2, F3 in Minecraft and check that they act like game keys instead of changing brightness or muting.
    4. To go back to brightness/volume icons as default, press Fn again to turn function mode off.

If using a Microsoft All-in-One Media Keyboard:

    1. Press Fn + Caps Lock together to turn FN Lock on (this makes the keys act as F1–F12 by default).
    2. Press Fn + Caps Lock again to turn it off.

Once function mode/FN Lock is on, Minecraft should see F1–F12 as normal function keys.
