On trying to confirm and access my Microsoft account I received notification that the e mail you were sending messages to is <removed PII>@regenova.co.uk which is a defunct account. My e mail address for my Microsoft account should be <removed PII>@outlook.com

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

May I please know if you have any other verification methods to prove your identity? Such as recovery phone number or email address?
If yes, you can sign in to the security settings page here to update the correct information - https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage

If you are unable to verify your identity as the verification code is being sent to an email address that is no longer active, you will have to replace the security information in your account.

That is, on the Verify Your Identity screen, select 'I don't have any of these' and follow the prompts to replace the Security information.

Note - If you remove all of your previous security information and replace it with something new, your account will be put into a restricted state for 30 days.

The email address for a Microsoft account cannot be changed or confirmed on behalf of the account owner here. To ensure the correct email address is set and verified on the Microsoft account, use the Microsoft account management pages:

    1. Check whether the intended address (the Outlook.com address) is already a Microsoft account:
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com and enter the Outlook.com address.
      • If a password prompt appears, that address is already a Microsoft account.
      • If a message appears such as “We couldn't find an account with that username” or “That Microsoft account doesn't exist,” then that address is not yet a Microsoft account.
    2. If the Outlook.com address is part of an existing Microsoft account but shows as unverified:
      • Sign in to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft using a verified sign-in method.
      • Under your sign-in aliases, locate the Outlook.com address.
      • If a Verify button appears next to it, select Verify, then Send email.
      • Open the inbox for the Outlook.com address, find the verification email, and follow the verification link.
    3. If the Outlook.com address is used as a backup/alias in Outlook.com:
      • Sign in with an already verified alias.
      • Sign in to the Outlook.com/alias mailbox and locate the verification email.
      • Open the email and select the verification link (for example, a link like https://account.live.com/Aliases/Verify?...).

If the old, defunct address is still listed as an alias or primary sign-in, it must be changed or removed from within the Microsoft account security/alias settings after signing in with a working, verified alias.
