My laptop has a problem where when I am using it outdoors the screen suddenly goes dim and within a few seconds locks or goes off. Then I have to sign in again but that keeps repeating making it hard to work on the laptop. It is so light sensitive. How can I fix this?

Also check your manufacturer’s app, such as Lenovo Vantage, Dell Optimizer, HP Command Center, MyASUS, or Acer Care Center. Many laptops have their own “adaptive brightness,” “ambient light sensor,” “presence detection,” or “power saving display” setting outside of Windows.

If it only happens outdoors, also make sure the laptop is not overheating in direct sunlight. Some laptops will dim or shut off the display when the panel or system gets too hot. Try using it in shade and see if the behavior stops.

The behavior described matches automatic brightness and power-saving features reacting strongly to outdoor light and battery conditions. To reduce dimming and blackouts, adjust these areas in Windows 11:

    1. Change adaptive/auto brightness
    • Open SettingsSystemDisplay.
    • Look for options related to brightness that mention “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes” or adaptive brightness.
    • Turn these options off so the Ambient Light Sensor doesn’t keep dimming the screen based on outdoor light.
    1. Adjust power and sleep settings
    • In SettingsSystemPower & battery:
      • Increase the time before the screen turns off on battery and when plugged in.
      • Increase the time before the device goes to sleep.
    • This prevents the screen from turning off or locking after just a few seconds.
    1. Check battery saver behavior
    • Still in Power & battery, check Battery saver settings.
    • If battery saver is set to turn on at a high percentage, it may dim the screen aggressively. Lower the threshold or turn automatic battery saver off.
    1. “Kick” auto-brightness if it gets stuck On some recent Windows builds, the Ambient Light Sensor can stop responding until a brightness-related action occurs. If auto-brightness stops reacting correctly after a reboot or wake:
    • Move the brightness slider manually in SettingsSystemDisplay, or
    • Use the keyboard brightness keys (often F5/F6 or similar), or
    • Plug/unplug the power adapter (switch between AC and battery), or
    • Turn Battery saver on and off, or
    • Put the device to sleep on battery and wake it. Any of these actions can restore normal auto-brightness behavior.
    1. If using a Surface device If this is a Surface, and brightness still changes unexpectedly with content or ambient light, see:
    • Adaptive brightness and contrast on Surface devices (linked from the Surface screen troubleshooting pages) to adjust how brightness responds.

If, after these changes, the screen still blacks out or shows a blank/black screen, use Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver, and check for display driver updates via Device Manager.
