On Word for Mac, deletions made with Track Changes turned on are what provide a strikethrough that can have its own color. Regular strikethrough text formatting cannot have a different color from the font color.
To ensure deletions show as strikethrough for clients:
- Confirm Track Changes is actually on, not just the view:
- On the Review tab, select Track Changes so it is highlighted. When Track Changes is on, deletions are marked with a strikethrough and additions with an underline, and different authors’ changes can use different colors.
- Confirm the view is set to show those deletions:
- On Review, in the Display for Review control, choose All Markup (or Simple Markup if preferred). In All Markup, deletions and insertions are visible in the text or balloons depending on your markup settings.
- Check markup display options:
- On Review > Show Markup, make sure Insertions and Deletions is checked.
- Adjust whether deletions appear inline or in balloons via Review > Show Markup > Balloons and choose Show All Revisions Inline if you want the strikethrough directly in the text rather than only in balloons.
If Track Changes is off, Word stops marking changes and no new strikethrough deletions will appear; any existing tracked deletions remain until accepted or rejected. To permanently remove the markup before sending final files, use Review > Accept or Reject to process each change or all changes at once.
Note that Word does not support changing the color of standard strikethrough font formatting itself; color control is only available for Track Changes markup. For legal or editorial workflows that require colored strikeout, use Track Changes deletions rather than manual strikethrough formatting.
