One Drive storage question

I am on windows 11. I don't want to use One Drive. I have turned it off and don't save new items to it. I have files and pictures that somehow One Drive captured, during set up I'm guessing. These files are on my hard drive. I am getting messages from Microsoft that I am at my storage limit.

Can I delete these files from One Drive on my microsoft log in account and not affect the files on my hard drive?

Thanks.

Brian

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Yes, you can delete files from OneDrive online to free up space. However, before deleting anything, make sure the files on your device are stored outside of the OneDrive folder (Local Disk C: / Users / Your Username / OneDrive).

First, move the files out of the OneDrive folder on your computer. Then delete a few of the files from OneDrive online and verify that they still remain on your hard drive.

Once deleted from OneDrive, you can permanently remove the files later from the OneDrive recycle bin next.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Deleting files from OneDrive can affect the copies on the hard drive, depending on where those files are stored and how OneDrive is configured.

    Key points:

    1. If the files are inside the OneDrive folder on the PC
    • Files in the OneDrive folder are synced between the PC and the cloud.
    • Deleting them from OneDrive (web) or from the OneDrive folder on the PC will delete them in both places.
    • To keep files only on the PC (not in OneDrive):
      1. Open File Explorer.
      2. Open the OneDrive folder.
      3. Move the files or folders out of the OneDrive folder to another folder on the PC (for example, C:\Users\\<name>\\Pictures or another custom folder).
      4. After moving them, they are no longer in OneDrive. They will remain only on the hard drive.
This follows the guidance: “If you want to keep a file, photo, or folder on your computer, but not on OneDrive, use File Explorer … to move the file outside your OneDrive folder to a different folder on your computer.”
    1. If the files are only on the PC and not in the OneDrive folder
    • Files stored outside the OneDrive folder (for example, on another drive or a non‑OneDrive folder) are not affected by deleting items from OneDrive.
    • Deleting files from OneDrive web in that case will not touch those separate local-only copies.
    1. To free OneDrive cloud storage safely
    • First move any files you want to keep out of the OneDrive folder (as above).
    • Then delete the remaining files and folders from OneDrive (either via File Explorer inside the OneDrive folder or via the OneDrive website) to reduce cloud usage.
    • Also empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin, because items there still count toward the OneDrive quota.
    1. If OneDrive is not wanted at all
    • OneDrive can be unlinked from the PC so it stops syncing, without losing files:
      1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
      2. Select the Help & Settings icon > Settings.
      3. On the Account tab, select Unlink this PC and confirm.
    • This stops sync; files already moved out of the OneDrive folder remain on the hard drive.

So, do not simply delete files that are still inside the OneDrive folder if those are the only copies. Move them to a non‑OneDrive folder first, then delete from OneDrive to clear the cloud storage and stop the quota warnings.
