My Microsoft 365 Subscription Reactivation

My annual subscription was recently cancelled most likely due to credit card number change in my account. I only discovered the cancellation 6/17/26. I attempted to reactivate by renewing my subscription but inadvertently paid twice for the $99 annual subscription. I cancelled one of the charges and Microsoft refunded the charge immediately although it is not posting yet on mt credit card transactions. However, my outlook account has not been reactivated.

Thank you for helping me,

Margaret Carnes

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

When you go to https://account.microsoft.com/services does the Microsoft 365 subscription show as Active or Expired?

Since the duplicate charge was just refunded, there can sometimes be a delay before the subscription status updates across Microsoft services. If the subscription shows as Active, try signing out of Outlook completely, restarting the device, and then signing back in.

Please provide the subscription status shown in your Microsoft account and any error message you see in Outlook. That will help determine the next step.

To get Outlook working again after the cancellation and duplicate payment, the subscription and payment status must be corrected, then Office reactivated on the device.

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Confirm the Microsoft 365 subscription is active
    1. Close all Office apps (including Outlook).
    2. Go to the Subscriptions page.
    3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used to purchase the $99 Microsoft 365 subscription.
    4. Under the Microsoft 365 heading, verify that the subscription shows as Active (not expired, cancelled, or past due).
    5. If it shows expired or cancelled, follow the steps in Renew Microsoft 365 Family from the article linked in the context to complete renewal again if needed.
  2. Check for any past-due or payment issues
Because there was a duplicate charge and a refund, the subscription may still be in a past-due or suspended state:
    1. On the same account, check if any Microsoft 365 subscription is marked as Past due. If so, select Pay now and complete payment as described in the past-due guidance.
    2. Ensure the correct subscription (the one that should remain) is fully paid and active.
  3. Verify payment method is valid and up to date
A card number change can cause suspension:
    1. Go to the Payment options page.
    2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
    3. If the payment method shows an error (expired or invalid card), update it or add a new payment method.
    4. After updating, return to the Services & subscriptions page and confirm the Microsoft 365 subscription is active and not past due.
  4. Reactivate the subscription in Office/Outlook on the device
Once the account shows an active subscription:
    1. Close Outlook and all other Office apps.
    2. Reopen Outlook. If a subscription or account notice appears (for example, an “ACCOUNT NOTICE” or “Unlicensed Product” banner), follow the prompts to sign in with the Microsoft account that has the active subscription.
    3. If Outlook still shows subscription errors, follow the troubleshooting steps in the “Account Notice” and “Unlicensed Product” articles referenced in the context to complete activation.
  5. If Outlook still is not reactivated
If the subscription is clearly Active and payment is correct, but Outlook continues to show subscription or activation errors, contact Microsoft Support for account-specific help. Use the billing/support paths in the referenced articles to reach Microsoft 365 and Office – Billing and Payment updates and start a chat with a support agent.

Note: The refund appearing on the credit card statement can take some time to post, even if Microsoft shows it as refunded immediately. That delay does not usually prevent activation as long as one valid, paid subscription remains active on the account.
