Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out here because I've hit a wall trying to resolve a billing issue with Azure and hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm new to Azure. I recently created an Azure account solely to explore the platform. I was not actively using any services or subscriptions, yet I was unexpectedly charged $147.70 (€129.87) without any prior notice. I would like to understand where this charge comes from and request a full refund, as well as ensure that no further charges occur and that any active subscriptions are cancelled.

I tried to submit a support ticket to get this resolved, but for some reason I was not able to send it. The portal mentioned that I needed to contact support directly, however, I could not find any direct support email or clear way to reach a real person.

If anyone has dealt with something similar or knows how to actually get in touch with Azure billing support, I would really appreciate the help.

Thank you.

Hello Jim, sorry you’re dealing with that. I can see you’re trying to

  1. figure out why you were charged
  2. get in touch with Azure billing support to request a refund and stop any future charges.

The Azure portal often loops you back to KB articles instead of letting you click Create. The proven trick (from multiple solved cases): don't click any of the suggested solutions — the Return to support request button gets you past the loop.

Here are the steps you can follow to create support requests:

  • Go to Azure portal > Search for Help + Support or https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Support/HelpAndSupportBlade/~/overview
  • Click on Create a Support Request.
  • On right-side panel, enter Billing and click Go > select the issue with "Billing" > select your Subscription then click Next.
  • Do not click on refund request button or any suggested articles instead click on the Create support request on top of the panel.
  • Select the Issue type as Billing and, select the summary, problem type and problem subtype as per your issue like below > then click on Next.
  • Do not click on refund request button or any recommendation solution/article, instead click on the Return to support request then click Next.
  • Fill all the required information and provide a clear description of your issue and click Next.
  • Review and create as submit the support request.
  • You should receive an automated email within a few minutes and then be contacted by support team.

    Hello Jim van der Wijst,

Greetings! Thanks for raising this question in the Q&A forum.

What is happening is that the new support request flow shows you AI suggested solutions first, and if you click any of those it loops you back instead of letting you actually submit a ticket. Billing support requests do not need a paid support plan and are free for every Azure customer, including brand new accounts, but you have to get past that solutions screen the right way. Here is how to do that and also track down where the charge came from.

    1. Identify the source of the charge first

Sign in to the Azure portal at portal.azure.com, then go to Cost Management + Billing, then Cost analysis for your subscription. Filter by the billing period that includes the charge date and group by resource or by meter category. This usually reveals whether the $147.70 came from a resource you deployed and forgot about, such as a VM, a Bastion host, or a public IP left running, since these are the most common sources of unexpected charges on new accounts. If nothing shows under your current subscription, also check Subscriptions to confirm whether more than one subscription exists under your account, since some signup flows create both a free trial and a separate pay as you go subscription.

    1. Submit the billing support request correctly
Go to: Help + support (the question mark icon in the top header)
    Select: Create a support request
    Issue type: Billing
Problem type: choose Avoid/Address a Charge or Billing Discrepancy
    Click: Next

    1. Bypass the AI suggestions loop

When the portal shows you suggested solutions or an AI assistant chat, do not click any of the suggested fixes. Look for a button labeled Create a support request or Return to support request near the top of that screen and select it. This skips the automated resolution step and takes you to the actual ticket form with Summary, Problem type, and Problem subtype fields.

    1. Complete and submit the ticket

Fill in the Additional details tab describing the unexpected charge, the amount, and that you want it reviewed and your subscription cancelled, choose your preferred contact method, then submit on the Review and create tab. You should get an automated confirmation email within a few minutes and a support engineer should contact you within one business day, since billing cases are handled even without a paid support plan.

    1. Cancel the subscription to stop further charges

While waiting on the support response, go to Subscriptions, select the subscription in question, and choose Cancel subscription. Cancelling stops new usage charges immediately even though the billing dispute itself is handled separately by the support engineer.

    1. If the portal still will not let you submit anything

If you hit repeated errors trying to create the ticket itself, use the direct link to the Cost Management support blade rather than the general help icon, since it sometimes avoids the same loop.

    https://portal.azure.com/#blade/Microsoft_Azure_Support/HelpAndSupportBlade/newsupportrequest

As a last resort if the portal flow truly will not submit, you can also reach Microsoft through the general customer service contact page and specify that this is an Azure billing issue so it gets routed correctly.

If this answer helps you kindly accept the answer which will help others who have similar questions.

    Best Regards,

    Jerald Felix.
