searching for a string in files

Under the old Windows, you could go to Start, Find, and then enter a string in quotes, to search for in all the files on your computer.

Is there still a way to do that?

Hi Richard Tillman,

Thanks for posting your question here. This happens because newer Windows systems work differently than older ones. Instead of checking every file’s content right away, they use a quick list that only saves file names and basic information by default while older Windows searched inside all files automatically, but now you have to turn on that setting first.

You can do any of these to search for text inside files just like the old Find feature:

  • Open File Explorer, go to “This PC,” type your phrase in quotes "like this" in the top-right box, then click Search Tools, select Advanced options, then File contents to scan inside files right away.
  • To make it work permanently. Go to Indexing Options, select Advanced, then File Types, choose “Index properties and file contents,” and let the system build its list, after that, future searches will find text automatically.

Let me know if you have questions, I am here to help.
