I found my MS Word display looking like this—there is an empty space on the right side, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it, even though I'm using A4 portrait orientation. Could someone please tell me how to get the view back to normal?

Your screenshot indicates 'Track Changes' is enabled on that document.

Select the Review tab on the top menu.

Click 'Track Changes' and choose to accept all changes to disable 'Track Changes', if there is a Markup setting in the 'Track Changes' section on your version of Word, select that and choose 'No Markup'.
