My mouse has gone crazy

At random times my mouse will start clicking repeatedly. I cannot control this. It is on my laptop, running Windows 11. I tried turning off the touchpad, turning off the mouse and removing the USB dongle that connects the laptop to the mouse. I also tried restarting the computer. Nothing helps.

I need suggestions as to what to do, because when it happens I can't control the computer.

On a laptop, this is almost always caused by the touchpad, not the external mouse.

Open the Settings App.

Go to Bluetooth and Devices - Touchpad.

On that settings window, there should be settings for the touchpad sensitivity, try turning that setting down, also, if there is a Palm Check setting, enable that, then check if that resolves the problem.

If that does not resolve the problem, go to the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website to download and reinstall (not update) the version of Touchpad drivers they provide.

    Hi Dave:

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I tried lowering the sensitivity but that didn't help. I went to the HP site and did some testing and it said everything was working. I am going away next week and decided to wait to try to reinstall the driver until I get back for that. Then later I was thinking that when it happened, it looked kind of like I was touching the screen (it has touchscreen). So I tried disabling that and it seems to be working. Even though I like to use the touch screen I hope that this is what was wrong.

So I am accepting your answer. Thanks again
