Doesn't Allow Editing on Mac

When trying to edit a word document on a mac, I continue to get the message "your account doesn't allow editing on a mac." How do I fix it?

What MacOS version do you have?

Tanner, what I asked was your MacOS version. Your 365 edition is not of concern here and I wasn't suggesting license issue either.

I sent that comment to the wrong user. My MacOS version is Tahoe 26.5.2.

Thanks. Just to make sure, this happens on all documents, not just one particular one, right?

If so, first, see if you can update your Office apps. Open Word for example, click on the 'Help' tab >Check for Updates. Make sure you choose Update All when prompted. Let the process run through, can take a bit time. See if that works.

If not, please uninstall the apps. Follow the instructions here for complete uninstall.

Then reinstall this way:

Please go to https://www.office.com

Sign into the Microsoft account you used for the subscription. Click on the 9-dot icon on the upper left > More apps.

Then on the upper right, click on "Install apps". This will now download the installer file. Once downloaded, click on the file to install. It will install the Desktop version of the apps for you then.

Uninstalling the apps then reinstalling was a success! My Word is now working properly. Thank you so much!

Based on your sharing, that error message means that your signed-in account doesn't have a license that allows desktop editing.

To better assist you in this situation, please go to My account > Subscription and let me know which license your current account is using:

To use Office apps on your mac, you need to have a license include desktop apps like Microsoft 365 Apps for business, Business Standard, Business Premium, Office 365 A3/A5, E3/E5.
If your license is A1 or Business Basic, it doesn't include desktop apps and as a result, you're not allowed to use Word on your Mac.

I am using Microsoft 365 Business Standard. I am an associate attorney at a law firm and need access to Word at all times. I am unable to do any work without the ability to edit Word documents. My Mac computer updated two days ago and, since the update, I cannot edit documents. I have a license. Could it be something to do with the Microsoft related keychain credentials?

If that's the case, it seems like you are experiencing the License not found error in Microsoft 365/Office running on MacOS which has occurred after the recent update on July 13.

Please try reinstalling directly from Microsoft download page, not from Mac App Store:

Completely delete the apps from your machine by going to Finder > Application > drag all Office apps into Trash > empty Trash

Sign into My account with your Microsoft account and go to My account > Install Office

The installer for Mac will be downloaded, and you can try reinstalling via that path to see if it helps.
