"Subscription required to edit and save" in MS-365, and error code 0x0 (Mac OS)

Since restarting my Mac all attempts to use Word come up against "Subscription required to edit and save" and terminate (via a 0x0 error code) in "Unable to Activate Microsoft 365". I've tried updating via the Microsoft AutoUpdate as advised on the Microsoft Support page (as updated on July 15, 2026) - it hasn't helped. What can I do?

Thank you.

Yes, at this point you want to uninstall it.

Your install source needs to match your purchase source.

If you signed up via Apple App Store, then download and install from the App Store.

If you signed up via Microsoft directly, please go to https://www.office.com

Sign into the Microsoft account you used for the subscription. Click on the 9-dot icon on the upper left > More apps.

Then on the upper right, click on "Install apps". This will now download the installer file. Once downloaded, click on the file to install. It will install the Desktop version of the apps for you then.

If it still doesn't work, download this updater and run it. https://support.microsoft.com/office/office-for-mac/troubleshoot-microsoft-autoupdate-in-microsoft-365-and-office-for-mac?apid=ets
