0xC004F211 since BIOS update

Hi.

I did a BIOS update on my MSI Z690 on August 5th. Since then my Windows 11 has deactivated with error 0xC004F211.

I have followed the Troubleshoot. It gives me the option to buy again, or select 'I recently changed hardware on this device'. I selected the latter, but it says there is no device that can be used to activate from.

If I log into my outlook account and look at the list of devices, I see my computer there twice. One is last seen August 5th, when I did the update. The other is, of course, seen recently.

My licence is Retail, the digital licence should have been created from my Windows 7 Ultimate licence when I did the upgrade to Windows 10 and then to Windows 11. It has worked all this time, even after CPU/Mainboard upgrades.

I have tried to re-enter the licence key (both Windows 7 and the one found by ShowKeyPlus), both do not work. The ShowKeyPlus says it is a default key, requires digital licence for activation.

All help paths dead end with 'Buy Windows'. I spent a long time putting the Installation ID only to be told it cannot activate and there is no obvious other path to follow. No phone numbers or email addresses. So I am left with this.

Can someone help me activate my Windows again please? If "Contact Support" is an answer please provide a UK number I can contact, otherwise I'll go in circles with the online help, again.

Many thanks.

You can no longer use a Windows 7/8 licence to activate Windows 11.

In 2023 Microsoft changed the settings and blocked the old licences for activation of Windows 10. This also affected Windows 11 as an upgraded Widows 10 licence was not intended to activate windows 11 only an original Windows 10 licence is allowed for that free upgrade.

I'm afraid the bios update prompted a check on the licence and it has been refused, I don't think any process will allow the activation.

If you wish the challenge the scenario you will need to contact Microsoft support directly. Use the Get Help app in windows and search the phrase billing then select Contact Support at the bottom of the window.

There will be another couple of filters to select then you should see chat with an agent in your browser. Have the original product key to hand.

Thank you.

I am afraid there is no contact number for an agent here. Can you tell me if these steps help? Your license is void, and it seems you will need to contact an agent.

Please contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

Exact steps to reach support:

  • Please go to the https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/home/contact page.
  • Click Microsoft Office / Windows depending on the issue.
  • Click Get Home Support.
  • Type "Billing" and press Enter.
  • Please click on the "Contact support" button at the bottom.
  • Select the Category for support based on your requirements.

I hope this information helps. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Otherwise, if your problem is resolved, please take a moment to close the question to help others. Wishing you good luck!
