Microsoft Word recently stopped working on my husband's computer. It gives him an error like "Activate Microsoft 365 to create and edit" - then when he signs in as "already bought Office, sign in" - he gets an error when he attempts to sign in that says "an unknown error has occurred - 0X0". We tried to fix this yesterday with a third party online "helper" - but never managed to. He has been on the Microsoft 365 subscription for a number of years without a problem. The fact that he is signed into Microsoft Outlook with a different work email address hasn't been a problem to date - but could that be part of the issue now?

At the top left of your husband's Desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?
He is on Sequoia 15.7.4 on his Macbook Air. But we updated to that after the problem occurred to see if updating would help - and it didn't. We have restarted the laptop multiple times since.

There is no problem indicated with the MacOS version, this problem is caused by the July update, the working solution to resolve this problem is to completely uninstall the Office apps using the steps provided on this link, then download and reinstall the Office apps from his Microsoft account online.
