Audio Issue in Teams

Microsoft Teams meeting volume extremely low even at 100%

I am experiencing extremely low audio volume during Microsoft Teams meetings. I have to turn the volume up to 100% just to hear participants at a reasonable level.

The issue appears to be specific to Teams. Audio from other applications on the computer plays at a normal volume.

I have already checked/tried:

Windows system volume is set to 100%.

Teams is set to the correct speaker/output device.

Teams volume in the Windows Volume Mixer is set to 100%.

Speaker/output device volume is set to 100%.

I have tested the Teams audio settings and confirmed the correct device is selected.

Voice Isolation has been turned off.

Windows and Teams have been restarted.

The issue continues during Teams meetings.

I am using a Lenovo Windows PC and the Teams desktop application.

Are there any additional Teams-specific audio settings, drivers, or known issues that could cause meeting audio to be significantly quieter than audio from other applications?

The answer did not help me fix the problem. However, I jumped on a call with IT. I had my Mic and listening speaker assigned to the same speaker and it was competing with the sound and making it quiet. So I changed my Mic input and it fixed the problem.

    Hi Ashley,

After reviewing the information you've provided, and the AI answer, the AI answer seems generally reasonable and includes several troubleshooting steps that you may try first.

    Additionally, you may also consider:

    • Checking Control Panel > Sound > Communications and ensuring Windows is set to Do nothing, as Windows can sometimes automatically reduce application audio during communication sessions.
    • Testing the same meeting in Teams for Web (Edge/Chrome) to see whether the behavior is specific to the Teams desktop client.
    • Confirming whether the issue occurs across different output devices (built-in speakers, wired headset, Bluetooth headset, external speakers, etc.), which may help isolate whether the problem is device-specific.

If the issue continues after trying the above steps, especially if it occurs across multiple audio devices and is reproducible in both Teams Desktop and Teams Web, I would recommend contacting your IT admin to open a ticket with Microsoft Support for further investigation, as that may indicate a deeper issue that requires advanced troubleshooting beyond the available client-side checks.

For guidance on how to request support, please refer to: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

In case you do not know who your IT admin is, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.

I hope everything gets sorted out soon. If you have any further questions or updates, please don’t hesitate to share.

Since Windows system volume, Teams device selection, Teams app volume, and the speaker volume are already confirmed, the remaining supported checks are:

    1. In Teams, go to Settings and more > Settings > Devices.
    2. Under Audio > Audio settings:
      • Confirm the correct Speaker is still selected.
      • Select Make a test call. If playback is also quiet there, the issue is reproducible inside Teams audio processing.
      • Check Noise suppression and set it to Background noise only if needed.
      • Make sure Spatial audio is off unless a compatible device is intentionally being used.
    3. During a meeting, select the dropdown next to Mic > More audio settings and verify the active audio settings there. Changes made in-meeting take effect immediately.
    4. In Windows, open Volume mixer again and verify both the system slider and the Teams app slider are high and not muted.
    5. In Windows, try the supported speaker-side fixes for low or quiet sound:
      • Right-click the Volume icon > Sounds.
      • On the Playback tab, select the active audio device > Properties.
      • On Enhancements, check Disable all enhancements.
      • On Advanced, try a different Default format and test again.
    6. Update or reinstall the audio driver:
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
      • Restart the PC.
      • If needed, reinstall the driver from the device manufacturer.

    Relevant supported observations:

    • Teams has additional audio controls beyond device selection, including Noise suppression, Spatial audio, and in-meeting More audio settings.
    • If other apps are normal but Teams is quiet, Windows speaker settings and audio driver behavior are still worth checking because they can affect app playback differently.
    • For low incoming audio generally, low sender volume can also be a factor. Microsoft notes that if incoming audio level is low, the sender’s microphone level or hardware can be the cause.

Based on the available guidance, the most relevant next actions are testing with Make a test call, turning off Windows playback enhancements, trying a different playback format, and updating or reinstalling the Lenovo audio driver.
