Office 2021 Home & Student license suddenly stopped working on Mac

Hi,

I purchased Office 2021 Home & Student in December 2021. The product is still listed in my Microsoft account, but none of my Office applications work properly anymore. They report that my Office 2021 license is not supported in this version of the apps and ask me to activate a Microsoft 365 subscription to create or edit documents.

My setup:

macOS Sequoia 15.8.1

Office apps version 16.114.1

Office downloaded directly from Microsoft's website

What I've tried:

Reinstalled Office twice

Removed the Office license files

Checked for updates; all apps are up to date

Nothing has resolved the issue.

I understand that support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, 2026, but I understand that this means the end of technical support and security updates, not the expiration of a perpetual license.

How can I restore my existing Office 2021 license and continue using the apps without purchasing Microsoft 365?

The instructions here did NOT work for me. For some reason, it took over 45 minutes to download, only to get the exact same blocking error. "Unable to save."

Then, I contacted support via chat and spent over an hour trying to get an UNBRICKED MS Office 2021 for Mac with a permanent license application. I tried three separate times before the process worked. Now at Version 16.110.2 (26062818) Word for Mac; and Version 16.110.2 (26062818) for Excel for Mac. So far, so good.

What could be improved here (IMO):

Detailed steps, in sequence, to "deinstall," as support had me run a "remove license" script.

Then what folder/files need to be "moved to trash".

Next, I restarted my Mac.

Ran (opened) the downloaded "Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.110.26062818_Installer.pkg"'

It's imperative to disable Auto-Update, which, until last year, ran standalone but somehow got integrated into each product component.

An entire 1/2 day was spent with MS Supportto get this working -- for a product I depend on, which I paid for. It bricked with NO warning, and offered no useful advice on keeping it working. Except, of course, to PAY into the never-ending subscription model.

My point: the de-install and re-install procedure might be more useful with all the detailed specific steps.

Please uninstall your Office apps.

After that, open any Office app, such as Word or Excel. From the top menu, select Help > Check for Updates. When Microsoft AutoUpdate opens, uncheck Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date, then confirm by clicking Turn Off.

That should work.

Thank you! I downloaded and installed the same Office update version directly from your link, and that resolved the issue.

I was already using version 16.114.1, so the difference seems to be that I installed it directly from purchased programs on Microsoft website. I'm not sure why this worked, but all my Office apps are working properly again.

The problem is version 16.114.1, the link I gave you is for 16.114. These are not the same version.

Ah, I see it now! I didn't realize that the versions were different. I was starting to think I would have to buy a new version of Office after all, so I'm really glad this worked! Thank you for clarifying and for helping me resolve the issue. I really appreciate it!
