Office Home & Student 2021

I purchased Microsoft Office Home & Student 2021 in April 2024 as a one-time, lifetime purchase. However, I recently encountered an issue on my Mac. When I open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, I receive a message saying, “Activate Microsoft 365 to create and edit,” followed by a notice that my Office 2021 license is not supported by this version of the application.

I have already confirmed that my Office Home & Student 2021 license is visible in my Microsoft account. I also tried reinstalling the applications, but the issue persists.

Since I purchased a perpetual license, I would like to continue using the Office 2021 applications without purchasing a Microsoft 365 subscription or upgrading to Office 2024.

Could you please advise me on how to resolve this activation issue? If the current version of the applications no longer supports my license, is it possible to download and install an older compatible version of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Mac?

This error is being reported with the Office apps on a Mac at the moment, follow these steps, step 3 is important.

Yes. A one-time Office 2021 license for Mac should continue to work, but it is not compatible with Office apps downloaded from the Mac App Store. Mac App Store versions require a Microsoft 365 subscription for editing and creation.

    Use this path:

    1. Check whether the apps came from the Mac App Store If they did, that is the cause. One-time licenses such as Office 2021 can only be used with Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft.
    2. Remove the current Office apps
      • Close Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
      • Open Finder > Applications.
      • Locate the Office apps and Move to Trash.
    3. Remove cached license data Run the official Office License Removal Tool for Mac. Important: this removes saved Office license information from the Mac, so the correct Microsoft account and password used for the purchase must be available to reactivate afterward.
    4. Reinstall Office directly from Microsoft Since the license already appears in the Microsoft account, reinstall from the Microsoft account services page or use the Microsoft installer package for Mac rather than the Mac App Store build.
    5. Sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns Office Home & Student 2021 After reinstall, open Word or Excel and activate using that account.
    6. If the Mac is on an older unsupported OS, update macOS first, then update Office Reduced functionality mode can also happen when Office is no longer supported on the installed operating system.

About installing an older compatible version:

    • Microsoft provides direct installer packages for Office for Mac, including Office 2021 for Mac Installer.
    • For Office 2019 for Mac, Microsoft states that updating or reinstalling cannot resolve the post-support reduced-functionality issue. That statement is specifically about Office 2019, not Office 2021.
    • The context also includes a similar resolved case where installing an older 16.114 build restored activation for Office 2021 on Mac and then disabling automatic updates in Microsoft AutoUpdate prevented the unsupported build from returning.

If standard reinstall plus license removal does not fix it, the supported next step from the available guidance is:

    1. Uninstall Office again.
    2. Install the older 16.114 package from this public link: https://res.public.onecdn.static.microsoft/mro1cdnstorage/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365_and_Office_16.114.26101123_BusinessPro_Installer.pkg?atp=ets
    3. Open an Office app.
    4. Go to Help > Check for Updates.
    5. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, turn off Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.

That workaround matches a documented similar Office 2021 for Mac activation case.
