Trying to delete user in Entra ID but it says Failed to Delete User. The principal performing this request cannot delete itself.

Hi,

I'm trying to delete my Microsoft account and to do so I have to close my Azure account, however when I try to delete my Azure user it says, Failed to delete user. The principal performing this request cannot delete itself.

How do I solve this issue?

As I understand you are trying to delete your Microsoft account from Entra ID. You are getting an error while doing that.

This is by design. You cannot delete your own account when you are logged in using your account.

To delete the user, you will have to login to Entra ID with another account which has roles assigned with permission to delete the user account.

For example, you will have to login with another account which has Global admin or user administrator role assigned and then you can delete any account in directory except the same account using which you have logged in.

Thank you for your help, I was able to remove myself as global admin then delete the default directory.
