How do I find the BitLocker Recovery Key when the Recovery Key ID doesn't match the numbers in my account except for the Key ID?

I am having trouble with my computer. I had a blue screen show up on Friday. I logged into my Microsoft Account and was following instructions to get a BitLocker Recovery Key. However, the only number that matches what the BitLocker page says I need is the Key ID. The Recovery Key shows 8 sets of 6 numbers that do not match the numbers shown on my BitLocker page that shows the Key ID Number. How do I get this computer unlocked It is my work computer that replaced a previous computer and I use it daily. Please help if at all possible. Thank you.

When BitLocker asks for a recovery key, it shows a Key ID on the blue recovery screen. This ID helps you identify which key to use if your Microsoft account or organization manages several.

The actual recovery key is a 48-digit number in 8 groups of 6 digits (like 123456-123456-...).

So can you try these in order

  • Check Microsoft Account first

Go to: https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey

  • Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on that PC.
  • You’ll see a list of recovery keys with:
    • Device name
    • Key ID
    • Recovery key (48-digit)

-> Compare the Key ID on the locked screen with the Key IDs listed. If they match, use that 48-digit recovery key to unlock.

- Try Other Locations Where BitLocker Keys May Be Stored

If the key isn't in your Microsoft account, check:

  • A printed copy (some setups print it to PDF or hardcopy)
  • A .txt file saved on a USB or another drive
  • Your organization's IT department (if it’s a work device, they may have enforced BitLocker and saved the key)

- If This is a Company-Issued PC

Since you said this is your work computer that replaced a previous one:

  • It's very likely your IT department or sysadmin has the BitLocker recovery key.
  • Contact your IT support team and provide them with the Key ID shown on your screen.
  • They can usually retrieve the key from their systems if the device was managed or joined to Azure AD.
