Login to Windows 11 Pro with Updated Microsoft Business Domain Email Address

Hi - my company name just changed and I purchased a new domain through Microsoft (I am the owner and admin for the company). My primary login on Windows 11 has been ******@sjfwhitepsych.com. After adding the new domain (I did not deregister the old domain), I changed my primary email address in the Microsoft 365 admin portal to the new address ******@parklandpsych.com, keeping the old address as an alias.

All microsoft services transitioned over to the new username except my desktop. Today, I attempted to login with ******@sjfwhitepsych.com and was advised "You can't login with that email account". After panicking, and trying my password, logging in with ******@parklandpsych.com, etc... I changed my primary login in microsoft 365 admin (on my phone) back to ******@sjfwhitepsych.com and fortunately was able to log back in.

How can I have my new domain email address login to Windows 11? I need for that new email address to be my primary.

Thanks!

Hello, this is Emily.

You will need to sign into your admin user on the local computer first. The username would be:

local\username (replace username with the actual local username).

Or if your local user is a personal Microsoft account, when you switch user, it should already list on the lower left for you to choose.

============

Once you are in, go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School, find the old domain email, disconnect it. Restart the computer.

Then again, go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School, click on Connect.

Don't sign into your work email yet. Instead, click on "Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID". On the next step, you will be prompted to sign in, then you can sign in with the new domain email.

Once done, restart the computer and you can use "switch user" to sign in using the new domain email.

    IT WORKED!

I had to enable to local admin account.

Then I followed your instructions - I was prompted that the password on the new domain email was incorrect so created a new one and got it directly to the old profile! I thought for sure that these steps were going to just result in a new profile with the new address so I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks!

    EDIT:

One thing that was missing in your instructions:

When deleting the old account, Windows 11 needed a local account as a backup so that the original profile could be accessed. Rather than just give the admin account with no password, I created a local account with administrator privileges and provided those. After that, the previous credentials/Entra ID deleted, I rebooted, added the new ones, logged out of the administrator account, entered the new login with the freshly created password and everything worked great. I replicated this on my notebook as well. Thanks again,

    Try this as username:

    local\administrator

Then leave password blank, see if it lets you get in.

Hi - I actually don't have a local user account set up - it is only the microsoft business account. In c:\users the folder used is StephenWhite so I attempted to login other "Other User" using local\StephenWhite and then entered the password associated with the microsoft account and I was advised "You can't sign in with a user ID in this format. Try using your email address instead." As you can imagine, that takes me back to square one.

In Windows Pro 24 24H2 there is no option to in Accounts > Your info to switch to a local account, otherwise I would do that.

I would prefer to not have to create a new profile and have to set up everything again if possible.

    Thanks!
