Why Date Created updates as well if the Date modified was updated in Windows 11?

I've been trying to sort out our internal documentation by the date it was created to identify if there are any that are outdated and need updating. I noticed that that every time I make changes in the document, it will not just update the Date Modified column, but also the Date Created column. The document is uploaded in OneDrive, but I'm accessing it through Windows File Explorer. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi Joseph,

I'm an Independent Advisor and I'm happy to help you.

Creation date gets updated whenever the file gets "created" in your system. This means, downloaded or moved from an external drive. Onedrive when uploading and downloading files from the cloud could make your system recognize it as downloaded, therefore "Created" at the current timestamp.

I would suggest to put dates inside the document since file creation time is not a reliable source to check this.

I hope this helps!

    Hi Francisco,

I conducted a test in my local storage and confirmed that your explanation is correct—the "Date Created" column does not update. Additionally, upon reviewing OneDrive via the web interface, I found that it does not have "Date Created" information or column. It appears that this is a limitation of OneDrive with no available fix. Thank you for your response; it was very helpful.
