Based upon the published information below, it is evident that a significant problem exists with the September 2022 Cumulative Security Update. Moreover, the September 2022 Cumulative Security Update marks the fifth consecutive time the monthly security update failed to install for me.

Notably, some prior cumulative security updates appeared to hang open on the desktop without any notice of completion or failure after waiting a considerable period of time.

After numerous feedback notices to Microsoft including details related within these posts:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/903771/kb5014699-x64-fails-to-install-on-21h2.html

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/972708/offline-cumulative-security-update-for-21h2-fails.html

....it now appears intrepid Microsoft engineers have made progress, as the September 2022 update did actually display a window indicating the update failed.

Moving forward, it would be helpful if Microsoft management would henceforth assign competent personnel to prepare cumulative security updates that actually complete updating windows 10 21H2, including surviving the reboot process without giving a notice that the update cannot complete.

May I suggest coders develop a template based upon the April 2022 Cumulative Security Upkate, as that was the last update that actually completed for me.

Nevertheless, I'm waiting for an October 2022 cumulative security update that actually installs and completes.

In the meantime, I plan to continue using Linux (not windows subsystem), as open source developers and maintainers consistently do a far better job of issuing security patches that install and function well.

Windows 10 KB5017308 cumulative update is causing new issues

https://www.windowslatest.com/2022/09/16/windows-10-kb5017308-update-is-causing-new-issues/

excerpted:

Unfortunately, KB5017308 won’t install for many users. Like the previous updates, this patch also fails to install after the download is finished, with one of the users stating “2022-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5017308) is not installing and gives an error (0x800f081f)”.

For other users, the update is refusing to install with error messages (0x8000ffff, 0x8007007e, and 0x80073701). In worse cases, it is forcing systems into a reboot loop where the patch is automatically reverted, but we’re unsure of how widespread this issue is.

I chatted with MS support and the only recommendation they provided was to do a clean install by booting from a USB ISO. Apparently, MS is aware of these update issues but doesn't have a fix despite the numerous updates it has released since the start of this problem in August at least for me. My trouble with update began with the release of KB5016629 in August. So I went back to the July Update KB5015882 and that installed perfectly fine. I have a feeling this has to do with a security patch KB5012170 that first came out around 8/9/2022 and all subsequent cum updates since then have been failing for me. The problem appears to be also isolated and affects certain hardware configuration. I have a Gigabyte Z390 UD 1.1 board with an i5-9600 and the latest F10 Bios and it's experiencing this problem. My drivers are all current and everything was working fine until the release of KB5016629.

All updates will be tested before release but due to the diversity of devices and their configurations unexpected issues like you discussed might arise. In such a case, we advise users to use the Feedback Hub app and file a bug report. This way, you may share log files and other valuable data so the Windows team would investigate and work on resolving the issue.

    Hi,

Thank you for your question and reaching out.

I understand that there have been some issues within the September cumulative updates for some users. We have received some several tickets with the same concerns. Rest assured that this will be taken care of Microsoft engineers and review it further. As a workaround, you may try to perform an in-place upgrade process to fix the issues you're getting from these updates. This is a repair installation process that will repair your Windows system and at the same time fix all the possible corruptions and complete missing components - causing the problems.

    1. Go to this link: https://aka.ms/downloadW10ISO and click on "Download now" button. (Not Update now button)
    2. Click on the MediaCreationTool file that has been downloaded and a new window named "Windows 10 Setup" will appear.
    3. Accept the terms and license agreement page but make sure to read it first.
    4. Choose "Upgrade this PC now".
    5. Wait for the process until it restarts the PC.

You may watch this video on how to perform an in-place upgrade. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/videoplayer/embed/RE201WL

While waiting and if you have spare time, you can submit a ticket using our Feedback hub application so Microsoft engineers can review this case and respond to you with a resolution. Here is the link for the Feedback hub app: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/feedback-hub/9nblggh4r32n#activetab=pivot:overviewtab

    Note to LimitlessTechnology-0326 and Reza-Ameri

Thank you for your responses but it appears you have not read the details of previous posts referenced as it was clearly communicaed that numerous bug reports were aready made and further, that numerous workarounds were already tried, including an in place reinstall and installing the patch to a completly new install of 21H2.

Therefore your replies are of no value in resolving this issue.

The Reza-Ameri reference as follows: All updates will be tested before release but due to the diversity of devices and their configurations unexpected issues like you discussed might arise.

,,,,also indicates to me that Microsoft is incapable of producing a working patch for its own proprietary software, whose own engineers wrote the code. This is absurd and is certainly not the case with with either Apple nor with Linux. It is time to assign competent personnel to this issue. Five months of failed patches for critical security issues is far too long considering the litany of vulnerabilities with Windows 10.

Here it is October 1st, 2022, and I'm having the same issue -
    My specs:
    Core i7-4790 3.6 Ghz, 4-core/8-thread
    64-bit Windows 10 Pro 19044.1889 (21H2)
    16 GB RAM
    Plenty of disk space.

KB5017308 - REPEATEDLY FAILS - even if I download as standalone MSU

    1. CONTINUALLY FAILS TO INSTALL!
    2. Does NOT install, even by downloading it from the MS Update catalog
    3. THIS IS MICROSOFT PUTTING USERS AT RISK, because NO OTHER UPDATES WILL INSTALL!
    4. TRIES TO INSTALL ON EVERY REBOOT and FAILS each time!
No real way to LOCK OUT a BAD UPDATE like this!
    5. CANNOT USE COMPUTER, since this update RETRIES on EVERY REBOOT !!
Takes about 30 minutes 100% DISK USE !!!! WEARING OUT THE HARD DRIVE!
      • NOTE: If this is on SSD, it WEARS OUT YOUR SSD as well, since you only have
        so many writes!

    * MICROSOFT, PLEASE ALLOW US TO * STOP *** BAD UPDATES!
-- for that matter, MICROSOFT SHOULD NOTICE "This update failed; let's exclude it!"

Class action lawsuit anyone? We PAID for the OS and now it does not work!
Not even on my standard Intel Quad-core/8-thread computer!

*** MICROSOFT, PLEASE FIX THIS! End of rant
