How to create a WIndows 10 Multi-Session VM in Azure. ?
Is Windows 10 Multi-session VM same as Azure Virtual Desktop (Windows Virtual desktop
Yes, this is the OS used by Azure Virtual Desktop however you can create a VM and choose Windows 10 multi-session from the Windows 10 images in the marketplace.
When i select Windows 10 multi-session, it asks for below license.
I confirm I have an eligible Windows 10/11 license with multi-tenant hosting rights.
If i dont have this license, how to get it ?
You need to purchase a qualifying license as per here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-desktop
You are eligible to access Windows 10 and Windows 7 with Azure Virtual Desktop if you have one of the following per user licenses*:
Microsoft 365 E3/E5
Microsoft 365 A3/A5/Student Use Benefits
Microsoft 365 F3
Microsoft 365 Business Premium**
Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5
Windows 10 Education A3/A5
Windows 10 VDA per user
** Microsoft 365 Business Premium was previously named Microsoft 365 Business prior to April 21, 2020.
1) Do we call this Azure VM having WIn10 with Multisesson image as Azure Virtual Desktop ?
2) After i provisoin an azure VM having WIndows 10 Multisession VM , then i created around 5 users for this VM.
Now when i try to login to this Azure VM , with the different azure accounts, i get the below message
The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login.
i thought many users can login to this Azure Windows10 VM with multisession enabled . Am i right ?
Please answers both my questions 1 and 2
Are they added as local administrator users? If your goal is to allow multiple users to access this then really this should be deployed as part of an Azure Virtual Desktop solution - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/
1) @Alan Kinane - you asked - If your goal is to allow multiple users to access this then really this should be deployed as part of an Azure Virtual Desktop solution - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/
so my question is then what does Win10 Multi-session option mean ? How is it different from Azure Virtual Desktop ?
2) i observed that when i promoted these users to be local administrators, then multiple users could login . So Do users need to be local administrators for multiple people to login ?
3) Also the licenses you mentioned , are they required for the end user to access the this Win 10 MultiSession VM. ?
Multiple users can login, to a multi-session image (whether its Windows 10 or 11).
If this is an Azure AD Joined VM, the users will need to be added to the Virtual Machine User Login - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/devices/howto-vm-sign-in-azure-ad-windows#azure-ad-portal
I recommend looking into deploying an AVD solution here for the best and most secure experience.
While provisioning the Windows 10 Multi-Session VM , i get this message
I confirm I have an eligible Windows 10/11 license with multi-tenant hosting rights.
1) is this the license for the VM or for the end user ?
2) How to get the above license ?
3) Can we domain join a Windows 10 Multi-Session VM to on-prem AD domain ?
The user license covers that VM license - as long as the users are licensed to use it. https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-desktop/
The cheapest and easiest would be Office licensing, you may find you already are licensed for it:
Yes, you can domaijn join muilti-session hosts to on-premises AD domains, as long as the hosts have line of sight to a domain controller (ie a domain controller in Azure, that is synced to an on-premises domain, via expressroute or site to site VPN)
you are talking about Azure Virtual Desktop License
My question is on the Multi-session Win 10 license (Not Azure Virtual Desktop).
I get this below message when provisioning multi-session win10 VM
I confirm I have an eligible Windows 10/11 license with multi-tenant hosting rights.
How can i get the license for this ?
The multisession Virtual Machines, running Windows client OS are built for Azure Virtual Desktop, essentially you need to be licensed for Azure Virtual Desktop as per above, to use them - even if they are being delivered, through another platform - like Citrix.
If the client has the below license, then how do we use that license for provisioning Azure VM having Win 10 multi-session ?
Microsoft 365 E3/E5
Microsoft 365 A3/A5/Student Use Benefits
Microsoft 365 F3
Microsoft 365 Business Premium**
Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5
Windows 10 Education A3/A5
Windows 10 VDA per user
Yes. If a user has any of the above licenses, then you are licensed for provisioning Windows 10 and 11 multi-session Virtual Machines.
so this license is user based , not device based.
Correct, for Windows 10/11.
